2006-08-30 * Vintage Re-Vamp

I finally finished my attempt to recreate Kim's Grandmother's Vintage Clutch. The original, which is darling and ladylike yet manages to hold quite a lot is this:

In addition to its many other wonderful qualities, what makes it so neat is the way it closes, and that the overlapping flap is actually two flaps that snap together asymmetrically and then fold over to make the one flap, like so:

So, my recreation is a bit untidy (I'm not as patient and precise about sewing curves as I should be), and the flap rather more asymmetrical than strictly necessary, but I think the pattern is a good start and will be fun to make again once I refine it a bit:

I think it would be neat if the outer fabric was black and the lining silver or gold, so the semi-circle that showed when it was closed was a real contrast. I have silver fabric but not any sturdy black fabric or heavy interfacing, so that version will have to wait!

Incidentally, the outer fabric of the bag was made from the skirt of a vintage dress given to me by Jen after she bought the skirt/jacket set for $5 when we were at the Alameda Flea Market together in May. I wonder if she'd like the bag to go with her jacket? If you're reading this Jen, let me know and its yours.

In other news, I made a ridiculously yummy cream of mushroom soup from this book. It makes rather a lot of soup, so there is some of the fridge which will be dinner tonight, and will look something like this:

And no, not all of my meals look so pretty, but yes, I wish they did! One of my projects in mental limbo is making some patchwork placemats, since those white ones are a bit dull.
