2007-03-05 * Serge of Inspiration (hah!)

My serger=awesome! I haven't exactly mastered it, but I have had to re-thread it (not hard at all), and remove a needle and the stitch finger to use the narrow rolled hem feature (which turns out so neat!). If you've been thinking about a serger but are intimidated (like I was), don't be! It has definitely inspired me to make more clothes!

After reading Susan's great review of Sew Stylish, I wanted to get my hands on a copy, and Nancy kindly obliged by giving me her copy. As these things go, once I read it I had to have the pattern they used throughout the magazine (Simplicity 3867, if you're curious). It arrived just after I got back and I started work on the cute cropped jacket with balloony sleeves

I used vintage home decor fabric from my Alameda Flea Market trip last year. It is a heavyish but drapey linen (I think?) and gave a much more formal, old fashioned result than I expected (Moondoggie called me his "little Musketeer" when he saw it). Despite having to bind the sleeve hems by hand (my "free arm" is not small enough for a narrow wrist), it was very easy to make, yet is, I think, the most professional-looking thing I've sewn.

So you can see the silky blue/green lining.

I have no clue what I'll wear it with! It would be more practical if it were longer and a solid color, but I'm sure I'll figure out something.

Recently my very favorite pair of pajama pants finally gave up the ghost. Despite how easy pj pants are to sew, I haven't gotten around to making replacements until now. And I made a little chemise to go with them too!

And an action shot, so you can see what they look like on

The cotton is soft and fine, they are very comfortable and fit *almost* as well as my favorites.

Obviously none of these things are the birthday gifts I'm meant to be finishing, so I'd better get back to it!

coveting: more serging expertise!
