2006-08-23 * Patchwork Piggy

I was torn today between completing a work in progress or making an entirely new project out of pieces I already had. I went with option two, and made this:

It is a patchwork scarf of leftovers from a crib quilt I made for a friend last year. It is backed with maroon flannel (which I also used to back the quilt)and I'm rather pleased with how it turned out. While I love the idea and look of quilting and patchwork, I am utterly dithery about actually matching fabrics, and terrible with cutting out and sewing together tiny pieces of things. Inevitably some of the pieces are a bit off, which is very bad indeed with quarter inch seam allowances. Plus I don't really have the patience to work on a project that can take months to complete and has so very many steps. Despite all that, I have been pondering making a throw-blanket sized quilt in the colors of aqua and orange, based solely on my obession with this fabric. But of course that would mean buying that fabric, and I'm not to buy anything until I've used up more of what I've got!

Anyway, back to the scarf. For scale and detail, here are a cruddy and unflattering picture of how it looks on (there is a Stay Puft quality there that convinces me I might need to retire this sweater) and a close-up of my favorite fabric in the patchwork (the one I built the quilt's color scheme around)

I also whipped up another pair of coraled earrings in a cherry blossom colors. I've been frustrated in my attempts to off-loom bead weave a necklace to incorporate branches, so earrings will be it, I think.

And now back to work with me! I have a nice wee pile of writing projects to do, all with deadlines in the next few days, and I had to get the crafting out of my system so I can dig in.
