2006-05-08 * Fleas? Yes please!

I know, I'm a day late on this one! And really, I've been holding out, because I made some truly wonderful finds at the flea market yesterday. First of all, the florals

Click to get a closer look at the tiny roses. While the blue stuff may not really be vintage at all, the rosy fabric is this wonderful, heavy, slightly shiny and textured fabric that is very definitely of an era past. I found myself sniffing fabric to see if it smelled new or like it might have been in a trunk or attic for awhile. The two bolts below definitely pass the sniff test, so much so that they need to be hung outside for awhile before using I think (someone was generous with the moth balls)

They are both heavy home decor weight and I can't wait to figure out just the right project for them. The blue/green chrysanthemum and iris one is most obviously great for big, roomy bags, but there is something wonderful about the more simple one too.

The orphan fabric-- it isn't floral and it isn't home decor:

Isn't that neat? The yellow backround is almost seersucker, and the little ships and characters are raised and rather felty feeling. I'm not sure how the heck one washes it, but I'm guessing carefully in cold. It would make a cute little top, I think. Does anyone out there know what the characters say?

And my friend Jen bought a vintage dress & jacket combo for $5. The jacket was darling and in good shape, while the dress was stained and ripped. However, the skirt is of very graphic fabric, so she gave me the dress to make something out of it

And the treasure of all treasures-- are you ready? I was walking along, getting sort of hot and hungry, when I saw something sticking out of a basket that caught my eye. "Crinolines!" I exclaimed somewhat giddily (I love crinolines). But no, it wasn't crinolines, it was the most perfect vintage dress! Exactly the same era as my wedding dress (late 50's/early 60's), my favorite shade of blue (eye-color) and with ruffles and bows

Yes, it needs a bit of a clean and a bit of a steam (note to self: find cleaner who specialises in vintage), but it is a genuine
