2007-01-08 * Ferny Dress Really, I promise I've been keeping up my progress on the w.i.p. bag. In fact, I finished the longest standing sewing work in progress I had. It was the *very first* commercial pattern I ever acquired. About ten years ago I asked my mother (who effortlessly whips up complicated things like dust ruffles and curtains and slipcovers, oh god, just the math involved makes me want to cower somewhere warm)to teach me how to sew. She took me to Joann's to pick a pattern, fabric, and all the necessary bits and pieces. I cut out the pattern, cut out the fabric (and interfacing, and lining), basted in the dart markings and promptly became scared and overwhelmed and just quit! I think maybe a strapless dress was a bit too ambitious a project for me to have picked, given that I'd never even sewn a pillow case before. Well, once I started sewing again (my mom, ever faithful, was the one who bought me my sewing maching), my mother sent me the dress pieces and accoutrements in the mail. This was perhaps a year or two ago? It lived in the bag until last Friday, when I took it out, ironed it, read through the pattern and got to work: It is made of a home decor cotton that is just lovely and makes me think that Joann's had higher quality fabrics back then. The pattern is ferns, dragonflies and bees! The thread we bought was also 100 percent cotton, which is so much nicer than the cotton/poly that seems to be everywhere now. And yes, the size I cut out back then fits me now, so I have a new dress for spring! Thanks, very belatedly, mom!
