2005-09-18 * Demons at the Table

I met my writing buddy Jen at our usual cafe last week, and as I was staring blankly at the table, realised that what I had thought was a tree painted on it actually included little devils-- see them above?

I love things like this-- the first time I encountered it (not counting Bosch, or the Victorian who went mad and painted all the tiny pictures of fairies he fervently believed were actually there-- and who knows, maybe they were) was at an art expo in Fort Mason here in SF in 2000. The artist who did it so brilliantly was Darren Waterston, who has since gotten more abstract and less whimsical. But I hope that he still hides little monkeys and birds and disembodied silhouette heads in his paintings.

reading: oy! everything I pick up lately stinks.
coveting: a pair of round-toed, mid-heel brown high boots-- slightly distressed, perhaps lace-up...
